OELRICHS - Many years ago, getting together with neighbors to play card and board games was a popular event in and around Oelrichs. The adults played card games at the table, and the kids played board games on the floor. For reasons unknown, the practice faded away. Well, the community decided to bring back the fun. A chili and game night was held Saturday, Feb. 10 at the Oelrichs Community Center with 15 in attendance.

Last summer, the community held a hobo dinner, which included lawn games and indoor board games. The success of the summer event spurred Doug and Timi Burdette to suggest a winter fun day, and the chili and game night came to life. People brought yummy food to share and their favorite board games. The Oelrichs Community Church provided the tableware and bottled water.

It became apparent pretty quickly which players took the pursuit of winning seriously, especially the group at the cribbage table. The rivalry was all in good fun, though. There were quite a few games that no one had played in years, for instance, Aggravation; but it didn’t take long to remember how to play. And some thought it would be fun to learn new games, even cribbage. But others maintain cribbage requires too much math to be fun.

The group plans to have a community game night at least every six months. They hope the popularity of the event will continue to grow and become a community tradition once again.
