Mammoth Site turns 50 years old
Body
On the bottom row of a large bookshelf in the office of the Fall River County Herald-Star is a row of bound newspaper indexes with hard green covers from the 1970s.
The 1974 book – from 50 years ago – features Hot Springs Star newspapers with headlines ranging from U.S. President Richard Nixon’s resignation, to Hot Springs’ Eddie Clay’s bid to be the state’s Lieutenant Governor, to the Hot Springs Bison football team’s undefeated season and the school’s first-ever state football championship by a vote of the sportswriters of the day.
Amongst those headlines in the back half of the year was an announcement in the June 6 edition, on page 4, which read: “New Housing Area Being Developed.” Placed beneath a pair of photos, the cutline stated: “Phil Anderson has started work on leveling and preparing some 20 acres of land along the truck by-pass for a housing development. He plans 30 to 40 lots with 75’ frontage.”
