KADOKA – The Edgemont Mogul track and field teams were busy last week competing in a pair of meets, first at the Comet Classic Invitational hosted by Rapid City Christian on Tuesday, May 1, and then at the People's Market/Discount Fuels Invitational on Saturday, May 5, in Kadoka.

At the 18-team Comet Classic last Tuesday, the Mogul boys finished in a three-way tie for eighth place with a team score of 30. Class “AA” Spearfish meanwhile was the top team with 81 points, followed by St. Thomas More.

“The boys took two medals in the long jump, including the the top spot on the day,” said Edgemont head coach Joe Martin. “We earned points in the longer sprints and set a SR (season record) in the 3200-meters. I like our versatility and what these guys do for our program each time they put on an EHS uniform.”

Freshman Caleb Simons won the long jump with a leap of 18-11, with his older brother Ryan finishing in fourth place at a distance of 18-02. Caleb was also third in the 200m (24.89), fourth in the 400m (55.57) and 10th in the 100m (12.08). Ryan meanwhile was also eighth in the 300m hurdles (47.77).

Junior Kaleb Darrow was the team's point winner in the 3,200m with a third place finish in a time of 11:37.8.

“The girls' day was highlighted by our performances in the 100-meter hurdles, shot put and triple jump,” said Coach Martin. “We showed promise in the relays we want to enter at Regions and look to improve those times. As the depth of the team improves we are looking to score in more individual events.”

Eighth-grader Morgan Peterson earned the team's highest finish on the day as she earned a PR (personal record) and placed second in the 100m hurdles (18.45). Peterson was also eighth in the 100m sprint with another PR of 14.10.

Sophomore Jenna Ostenson was seventh in the 100m hurdles (19.61) and 10th in the 300m hurdles (1:00.7).

In field events, Abby Tidball placed sixth in the shot put (32-06) and seventh-grader Peyton Ostenson was sixth in the triple jump (27-03.5).

The girls' top finishing relay was the 4x400m team of Peyton Ostenson, Sarah Barker, Abby Tidball and Morgan Peterson, which placed sixth with a time of 4:55.26.

In Kadoka this past Saturday, the team again had a number of strong individual performances.

“The boys captured two titles today while placing multiple times in the long jump and 100-meters,” Martin said. “We recorded several PRs throughout the day and I was pleased with the effort it took to run those times.”

Caleb Simons won both the 100m (12.11) and long jump (18-11.25) while also placing second in the 200m (25.51) and sixth in the 800m (2:19.57).

Ryan Simons was second in the 200m (25.51), third in the 100m (12.35), fourth in the 300m hurdles (47.37) and fourth in the long jump (17-09).

Kaleb Darrow was second in the 3200m (12:21.63), third in 1600m (5:09.03) and eighth in 800m (2:20.72).

“The girls ran strong in both hurdle events taking top honors in the 100-meters, multiple medals in the triple jump, placing in both throwing events, and a list of PRs in our tougher events made for a memorable day,” Martin added.

Sophomore Jenna Ostenson won the 100m hurdles in a time of 19.23 while also placing fifth in the 300m hurdles (1:00.01), as well as fourth in the triple jump (26-10.5).

Junior Abby Tidball was fourth in the shot put (32-03), sixth in the discus (95-10), seventh in the 200m (30.61) and eighth in the 800m (1:12.37).

Freshman Elli Hollenbeck was fifth in the triple jump (25-04.5), eighth in the 3200m (15:57.81) and ninth in the 800m (3:02.35).

“We had a productive week and head into the final stretch of our season focused on strengthening our core events,” Coach Martin said. “The kids are poised for a strong finish to the season and their school year.”
