Lady Bison top field in two straight meets

HOT SPRINGS – The Hot Springs girls' golf team caught fire last week as they proved to be the top team in a pair of meets, first winning the 11-team Spearfish Invitational on Tuesday, May 1, and then following that up two days later with another team title in the eight-team Hot Springs Invitational on Thursday, May 3.

At home last Thursday, the Lady Bison shot a four-person, 18-hole round of 356, well ahead of runner-up Belle Fourche with 373. Spearfish took third with a score of 415. Other teams competing included Red Cloud, Custer, St. Thomas More, Sturgis and Douglas.

The meet medalist title went to Alex Kandolin of St. Thomas More with an 18-hole score of 76, followed by Belle’s Payson Birkeland with 78 and then Hot Springs' Aryona Watts with 79. Molly Schwartz of Douglas was fourth with 80 while Chelsea Powles of Sturgis was fifth with 85.

Other Hot Springs scores included Malory Olstad shooting an 86 for seventh place, followed by Madilyn Palo (94), Sydney Olstad (97), Jessi Schroeder (98), Adrianna Krush (107) and Ava Krush (144).

The Hot Springs JV was led by Allyson Kattke with a nine-hole round of 62, which was good enough for first place, followed by Abby Kerr (73), Ciara Stewart (76), Lyndsay Reetz (76), Jordyn Conlon (77) and Lynnea LeBar (78).

In Spearfish last Tuesday, Hot Springs won with a four-person, 18-hole score of 375, which was 20 strokes ahead of their nearest competition in St. Thomas More, who was the runner-up with 395, followed by Belle Fourche with 400. Other teams entered included Spearfish, Sturgis, Douglas, Rapid City Central, Rapid City Stevens, Red Cloud and Lead-Deadwood.

STM's Alex Kandolin was again the meet medalist with an 18-hole score of 76, followed by Douglas’s Molly Schwartz (80), Belle’s Payson Birkeland (85) and Jade Burr (86) and Rapid City Steven’s Emmy Sundby (88).

Hot Springs was led by eighth-grader Sydney Olstad who shot a career-best 91 to place seventh overall. She was followed by older sister Malory Olstad and teammte Aryona Watts who placed ninth and 10th each with scores of 94. Jessi Schroeder shot 96, Madilyn Palo 103, and Adrianna Krush 113.

This week the Lady Bison play in the Sturgis Invite on Tuesday, May 8, at the Boulder Canyon Golf Course, followed by the Black Hills Conference Championship at Douglas on the Prairie Ridge Golf Course on Thursday, May 10.
