Coach looking forward to summer league play

EDGEMONT – The Edgemont boys' basketball concluded its 2017-18 season last Monday night in the first round of the Region 7B playoffs with a 51-73 loss at the hands of the Wall Eagles. The Moguls entered the tournament as the 10th seed with a record of 6-14, with Wall as the seventh seed and a 7-13 record.

“The Eagles have been a tough matchup for us over the years,” said Edgemont boys head coach Joe Martin. “We needed to start fast and we did, controlling the defensive boards, coming up with steals, hitting tough shots, and shooting well at the line through the night. I was proud of our effort and the mindset the kids brought with them to Wall.”

The Moguls' effort in the opening quarter kept the game close, with it tied 11-all at one point, but then Wall went on a run to finish the quarter and give the Eagles an 18-11 advantage heading into the second quarter.

“Wall used a 7-0 run to close the first quarter,” said Coach Martin. “We kept our focus and played well in the second quarter cutting the deficit to 24-21 with only 1:30 left before halftime. It was at this point Wall closed the half on a 14-0 run to take their biggest lead of the half into the locker room.”

Down 21-38 at halftime, Coach Martin said his team played very well in the second half to finish out the game, and their season.

“Coming out of the break we went back to work and during the 4th quarter had cut the lead to 12 points as every member of our team was locked in during the second half. It was a fun postseason game to be a part of, and with our starting five returning next year look forward to seeing the Eagles again in December.”

The Moguls were led by a pair of juniors in Ryan Simons and Kaleb Darrow, who each scored 15 points apiece. Simons actually finished the game with a double-double when adding in his 11 rebounds – 10 of which were on the defensive side of the court. Darrow meanwhile grabbed eight boards for the second-most on the team.

Other Edgemont players contributing to the offense included freshman Caleb Simons with nine points, senior Corey Andrie with six points, and then senior Clay Englebert, junior Dalton Reutter, freshman Grant Darrow each scoring two points apiece.

Wall was led by Damion Bresee with 19 points, and Jacob Bielmaier with 16.

Season ending stats for the Moguls show freshman Caleb Simons as the team's leading scorer with 290, which is an average of 15.3 per game. Junior teammate Kaleb Darrow is second with 261 total points (13.7 avg). Darrow was the leading rebounder with 100 total (5.3 per game), with Dalton Reutter and Caleb Simons very close behind with 99 and 98 respectively (5.2 per game).

“Single digit victories over Guernsey-Sunrise, Hay Springs, and old Rushmore Conference rival New Underwood highlighted the 2017-18 season,” added Coach Martin, while relecting back on the Moguls' recently completed campaign. “After finishing 6-15 the starting line-up is set to return in 2018-19. While losing two seniors, five others with varsity experience will return.”

“We play a lot of summer league,” Martin said. “I enjoy coaching in the summer, it gives us another opportunity to work together in tough situations that we can’t generate in practice.”

For the second offseason in a row, the coach said his boys will play at Chadron State College's Chicoine Center in Chadron, Neb. on Mondays beginning in June. “We play two games a night for six weeks. The two off-seasons prior to going to CSC we competed at Rapid City Stevens on Wednesday’s. Both have been great teaching tools and learning experiences for the kids.”

“Our A.D. does a great job organizing satellite camps in Edgemont allowing kids to attend a camp or two in their hometown. It’s a collective effort of sharing the gym and other resources as all of our programs at EHS are active during the summer months, and year round for that matter,” Martin added.
