HOT SPRINGS – More than 250 wrestlers from 25 teams in a three-state area competed this past Sunday, Dec. 17, at the annual Pat Weiss Memorial Youth Wrestling Tournament in Case Auditorium.

The tournament was named after Hot Springs High School’s first-ever state wrestling champion, Pat Weiss, who earned the 98-pound division of the South Dakota Class “A” Championship in 1981. Weiss – who died on Feb. 7, 2022, following a more than six year battle with cancer – was also a 2017 inductee into the Hot Springs Bison Athletics Hall of Fame. His athletic story saw him go winless as a freshman on the Hot Springs Bison wrestling team (0-18) but then improve to 12-13 as a sophomore and then a combined 50-5 in his junior and senior seasons which included a state runner-up medal in 1980 followed by a state title in 1981.

In addition to the tournament being named after Weiss, a new award was presented this year entitled the Pat Weiss Heart of a Champion Award with the winner selected from a list of nominees from each team’s coach of a wrestler who is coachable, supports his teammates and has a great attitude (win or lose).

This year’s recipient of the award was Tanner Lenardson of Newcastle, Wyo., who would go on to place third in the Novice 108 pound division after losing his first match by a 8-0 major decision, but coming back to win his second match by a 1:25 pin.
