Craig Allen Huntley

December 14, 1954 - October 10, 2023

Craig Allen Huntley, 68, passed away peacefully at Monument Health, Tuesday October 10, 2023, in Rapid City, S.D., after a brief illness.

Craig was born on December 14, 1954, to Charles (Chuck) Leroy Huntley and Betty Jean Travis in Clear Lake, Iowa.  Craig was the youngest of four boys. In the early 1960’s the family moved from Iowa to Hot Springs, S.D.

While in Hot Springs, the family owned and operated Fall River Bakery. All the Huntley boys were expected to work in the family business. This is where Craig learned to love being in the kitchen cooking and baking. This love carried over into his adult life. Craig enjoyed spending time in the kitchen and often shared stories from meals he hosted with friends and family.

Chuck and Betty loved the outdoors and often took their four boys camping and fishing. This is where Craig developed his affection for nature, camping/fishing, and the Black Hills. It was the Hills and his family that lured him back to the area after his military service.

After graduating from Hot Springs High School, Craig enlisted in the United States Air Force. Craig’s time in the service allowed him to explore many states within the US.  One of my favorite stories Craig told about his military time had nothing to do with the military at all. While stationed in Mrytle Beach, N.C., his parents went to visit; as he told the story (always stifling giggles), he and his mom were on the beach watching his father standing in the ocean. With each rolling wave, his father’s shorts sunk lower and lower, until they finally reached the point of no return. The best part of Craig telling the story was his contagious laugh. Anyone that had the privilege to spend time with Craig knows his laugh. I can remember during one visit he took my family swimming at Evans Plunge. While making a splash landing off the banana slide, he himself lost his shorts, what I remember most was how his laugh echoed off the walls as he regained his clothing.

Craig was an eternal optimist. He was always armed with a smile and a twinkle in his blue eyes. He had a fantastic sense of humor that simply exuded from him. Even after receiving a cancer diagnosis, he stayed positive and optimistic.

Craig is survived by his brother, Richard (Dick) Huntley and wife Bonnie Huntley of Fargo N.D. Craig is also survived by his niece, Melissa (Huntley) Broneske and husband Andi Broneske of Argusville, N.D., and their children Kayla Thompson (husband Hunter), Maximus Broneske, and Linden Broneske.

Craig was greeted in heaven by his parents, Chuck and Betty Huntley, and older brothers, Larry Lee Huntley and Raymond Eugene Huntley.

A Celebration of Craig’s Life was held on Saturday, October 14, 2023. Thank you to everyone for your thoughts and prayers for Craig and the Huntley Family!

Arrangements have been placed in the care of Chamberlain McColley’s Funeral Home in Hot Springs, S.D.
