Irene Elsie (Sachan) Becker, a loving and loved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, was born on July 26, 1931, to Albert and Anne (Stone) Sachan in Deer Creek, Minnesota. She grew up in Minnesota and graduated from Deer Creek School in 1949. She attended Business College at Fergus Falls after graduation. She married Lawrence on October 7, 1950, at Deer Creek, Minn. They moved to Hot Springs in 1959 and enjoyed raising their family, working and the many wonderful friends that they have.
Irene worked for the Hospital as a nurse’s aide, the Montgomery Ward store, receptionist at the clinic for Dr. Jacobson and Dr. Lopez and at the Veteran’s Home as well as teaching many young people piano lessons.
Irene truly enjoyed playing piano, organ and the accordian. She was the organist at Bethesda Lutheran Church for 55+ years as well as accompanying many musical activities in Hot Springs including Sandstone Singers and the Miss SD pageant. She also enjoyed the crafts of sewing, crocheting, upholstery and furniture refurbishing. The creation of a large herd of rocking horses was an accomplishment that Irene and Larry both enjoyed together.
Irene’s spirit of mentoring, encouragement and independence was daily demonstrated to her family and has served as a positive force in all their lives. She loved her life and living in Hot Springs.
Irene’s last years were spent at Pine Hills Retirement Community and Avantara Arrowhead Nursing home when her medical condition required more care. In the last year of her life she was challenged with major medical issues and dealt with them with boundless energy and determination.
Irene passed away of age related conditions at Avantara Arrowhead Nursing Home in Rapid City on September 4, 2020, at the age of 89 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence and parents, Albert and Anne. She is survived by her children, Mike (Deb) Becker of Rapid City; Sharon (Richard) Hallberg of Smyma, Ga.; Donna (Joseph) Charron of Torrington, Wyo.; Nancy (Kent) Bryant of Rapid City; Sally (Jeff) Menze of Holyoke, Minn.; 16 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Lloyd (Carole) of Lake Isabella, Cali., as well as many nephews and nieces and cousins.
Visitation will be held at 9:30 a.m., Friday, September 18, 2020, at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Hot Springs.
Memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Friday, September 18, 2020 at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Hot Springs, with Pastor John Merrill officiating. Internment will follow immediately at Evergreen Cemetery in Hot Springs.
