Airport's family "fly-in" day a big success

By Brett Nachtigall

HOT SPRINGS – The first-ever “Fly In Family Fun Day” this past Saturday, June 2, at the Hot Springs Airport was a high-flying success on most all accounts, despite strong winds in the Southern Hills preventing a few of the planned activities to take place.

Its estimated that around 200 people attended the event, which included a walk-in hot air balloon, a fly-over flour drop for the kids, glider rides, Civil Air Patrol booth, breakfast served by the Fall River County 4-H clubs and lunch served by the Hot Springs Lions Club. Some of the things which did not take place due to the strong winds were tethered hot air balloon rides and skydiving.

Undoubtedly the highlight of the event was the flour drop, in which kids who signed up were paired with a pilot and plane, taken up into the air and then participated in a fly-over where they dropped a paper bag filled with flour, in attempt to land closest to the target.

A total of 22 kids took part in this fun competition, with Wyatt Nellen of Hot Springs taking first place when he dropped his flour bag within 7-feet of the target, which was located in the center of a mowed circle near the runway. For his efforts, Nellen won a fly over Mt. Rushmore and the Badlands from one of Hot Springs’ local pilots.

Other top-five winners were:

Second Place – Emma Niles of Hot Springs (local flight trip)

Third Place – Braden Grill of Hot Springs (glider ride)

Fourth Place – Allie Brunson of Edgemont (Family 4-pack pass to Evans Plunge)

Fifth Place – Reina Wilson of Hot Springs (Chamber Bucks)

While flying his homebuilt Cessna Cub airplane relatively low to the ground, pilot Clint Busentiz of Oral looks back and helps direct his youth passenger when to drop his bag of flour in an attempt land it closest to a set up target located in a mowed area on the ground below. The competition in which they were participating in was part of this past weekend’s Family Day at the Hot Springs Airport.
