HOT SPRINGS – A 50-year-old Hot Springs woman has been identified as the person who died late Saturday night, Sept. 4, in a two-vehicle crash 12 miles northeast of Hot Springs.
Preliminary crash information indicates that a 2020 Harley-Davidson Street Glide motorcycle was southbound on South Dakota Highway 79 when the motorcycle struck a deer that had ran onto the roadway. The driver, Deanna Elmquist, was thrown from the motorcycle into the southbound driving lane. She was then struck by a southbound 2019 Honda Pilot, driven by Darryl Anderson, 70, of Gillette, Wyo., which could not avoid hitting her.
Elmquist was pronounced dead at the scene. Anderson, who was wearing a seat belt, was not injured. The accident occurred at approximately 10:38 p.m.
South Dakota’s Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. All information released so far is only preliminary.
The Highway Patrol is part of the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.
