HOT SPRINGS – After much discussion over the past few weeks, the Hot Springs High School Alumni Association announced recently that they will be organizing the next HSHS All-Class Reunion for 2025.
Previously, the event had been planned to take place in Hot Springs over the Fourth of July weekend in 2020. However, like most summer events last year, the reunion was canceled and postponed for a yet-to-be-determined date.
According to HSHS Alumni Association President Stacey Martin, there were three options considered in moving forward, which included having the All-Class Reunion later this summer in 2021, postponing until 2022 or pushing it back until the summer of 2025.
Following a vote by decade and class planners, along with input from the Alumni Board, it was decided to plan the event for 2025, which will not only push it back past the COVID-19 precautions, but also until after the downtown Hwy. 385 road construction is completed.
“Dealing with uncertainty is one of the most difficult and frustrating things when working as a volunteer planner,” said Martin. “Many of us in that room had put in a lot of time planning for the 2020 reunion only to see it cancelled for events outside of anyone’s control. These problems continue into 2021 and in 2022 a massive road construction project is slated to tear apart downtown for a couple years.”
Martin further summarized the discussion and said, “No one wants to plan a large event and have to cancel. No one wants to plan a large event and have participants frustrated or annoyed the whole time by inconvenient travel; or worse not have people show up.”
By postponing to 2025, the group hopes to invite alumni back to Hot Springs to see the new downtown with the new suspended sidewalk along North River Street, along with hopefully more shopping and dining available along the new road as well, in addition to COVID hopefully being a distant memory.
There will still be reunions and get-togethers in the meantime, she said. Several classes are planning their class reunions for this year and next. The 1970s classes are discussing organizing an informal alumni picnic, open to all, next summer (2022) during the weekend of the Fourth.
“We know the delay is disappointing to many, we hope you will be understanding of our volunteer’s time and effort,” Martin added.
