Fall River County Weed and Pest Board Meeting Minutes

December 5, 2017

The Fall River County Weed and Pest Board Meeting was called to order by Jerry Wyatt, President at 2:00 p.m. December 5, 2017 at the Fall River County Weed and Pest Office/South Annex meeting room. Attending members were Bob Novotny, Joe Falkenburg, Wayne Hageman, Nina Steinmetz, Telca Paprocki, Buffalo Gap National Grasslands Rep. Audience in attendance were Ron Moehring, SD Department of Ag., Mike Stenson, SD Department of Ag, Susan Henderson, Mark and Karla Weldon, Cindy Brunson. All motions unanimous unless otherwise stated. Motion to approve the agenda and minutes of the last meeting were made by Joe Falkenburg and seconded by Wayne Hageman.

Old Business: 

Nina Steinmetz, Weed and Pest Supervisor gave a report on the Black Hills Invasive Plant Partnership Meeting held November 8, 2017 in Rapid City. Nina Steinmetz had taken a sample of Absinth Wormwood for identification.

The Weed and Pest Office is waiting for the SD Conservation and Forestry Grant funds to be deposited before sending out reimbursement funds to landowners. Target date is now December 20, 20107 for mailing.

New Business:

The Fall River Weed and Pest staff will be attending the Conservation Leaders meeting December 8, 2017 at 9:00 a.m. in Custer.

Ron Moehring from the SD Department Ag. gave a historical overview of the Prairie Dog Complaint strategy and steps for a complaint and enforcement. He also shared possible management methods. Discussion was held on the six complaints for Prairie Dog Encroachment that had been filed with the Fall River Office as of November 27, 2017 and the status of each complaint.

After a lengthy discussion with all parties involved a motion was made by Wayne Hageman and seconded by Bob Novotny to file a Declaration of Infestation on property Section 15, Township 10S and Range 3E –D. Henderson for an infestation of Prairie Dogs, December 5, 2017. Board Member’s vote: Jerry Wyatt – Yes, Bob Novotny- Yes, Joe Falkenburg- Yes, Wayne Hageman- Yes, John Sides – Absent. Motion passed.

The next meeting will be set to follow the January 2018 first Commissioner meeting at 2:00 at the Fall River County Weed and Pest Office/South Annex meeting room. Meeting was adjourned.
