FALL RIVER COUNTY WEED & PEST BOARD MEETING
The Fall River County Weed and Pest Board meeting was called to order by President Jerry Wyatt at 1:10 p.m., May 4, 2023 at the Fall River County South Annex meeting room. Attending members were Bob Novotny, Wayne Hageman, and Nina Steinmetz. Telca Paprocki and Julie Wheeler, Buffalo Gap Grasslands representatives were also in attendance. All motions unanimous unless otherwise stated.
Motion to approve the agenda and minutes of the last meeting were made by Wayne H. and seconded by Bob Novotny.
Old Business:
The Spring Fling that was to be May 6th was cancelled and Nina is looking at having the Pasture Walk in July or in Aug. during the Fair in Edgemont. It was suggested to have 2 different times to go for walks if during the Fair.
Report on Invasive Annual Grasses Meeting in Belle Fourche on April 27, was given by Nina S. The main topic was on the invasive grass Ventenata and then the presence of Aquatic invasive Zebra Mussels. Was a very good presentation by Brian Mealor and his team members from the Sheridan Research and Extension Center.
Status of weed / pest growth – present in collection pots were samples of Bull and Musk thistles, common mullein, Dalmation Toadflax, Curly Dock, and White Horehound Mint. In the outside pots were samples of grasses – green needle , smooth brome, intermedian wheat grass, and coming soon Little and Big blue stem and crested wheat.
New Business:
Bob N. made the motion to keep the county spray rates the same as in 2022. Wayne H. seconded the motion.
The Fall River Extension Service can now administer the Commercial Applicator’s Tests. They ask that an appointment be made for a testing date and time.
2023 Newsletter –“The Insider” first rough draft was seen. We are looking at increasing the number of pages to handle a lot of new information that we would like to see included.
The District 4 Invasive Weed Training will be held in Rapid City, Wednesday, May 24th and a Soil Health & Sustainability Landowner meeting will be June 16, 2023 in Rapid City.
The next meeting will be June 1, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. at the Fall River County Weed and Pest Office/South Annex. Meeting was adjourned.
