Vice President Colby Williams called the Special Board Meeting of the Hot Springs School Board to order at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, February 6, 2023, with the following members present: Nikki Shaw, Katie Burchfield, Brian Jarding, Petra Wilson, and Robert J Preuss. Members Absent: President Ryan Walz. Others present: Superintendent Fischer, Business Manager Bilbruck, Principal Karn, Principal Klinkhammer, Assistant Principal Trevillyan, Special Services Director Schniers, Athletic Director Deming, SRO McMillian, staff and community members and others logged in as guests.
ALL ACTIONS RECORDED IN THESE MINUTES WERE BY UNANIMOUS VOTE UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED.
23.136 Approval of Agenda – Motion by Member Jarding, second by Member Preuss to accept the amended agenda adding item 5.A: New Business - acceptance of counselor resignation. Motion carried 6/0, one absent.
23.137 Public Participation – Two community members presented to the board. Ryan Engel addressed the board regarding a lesson taught by the school counselor in December and an issue with bullying in the district. Joni Burgess addressed the board regarding “woke” in the school district, mental health, IXL testing, and grading being done on subjects not yet taught in the classroom.
23.138 Conflicts Disclosure – None.
23.139 Executive Session – Member Preuss moved to enter executive session to discuss Personnel SDCL 1-25-2(1). Motion by Member Shaw, second by Member Wilson. Motion carried 6/0, one absent. Entered executive session at 5:40 p.m.
23.140 Out of Executive Session at 6:21 p.m.
23.141 New Business: Acceptance of Counselor Resignation (Amended) – Motion by Member Jarding, second by Member Preuss to accept the school counselor, Ms. Brittany Pieke, resignation date change from the end of the school year to effective immediately with no penalty. Motion carried 6/0, one absent.
23.142 Vice President Williams moved to enter Private Session. Motion by Member Preuss, second by Member Jarding. Motion carried 6/0, one absent. Entered Private Session at 6:25 p.m.
23.143 President Walz entered Private Session at 7:01 p.m.
23.144 Out of Private Session at 7:16 p.m.
23.145 Executive Session – Motion by President Walz, second by Member Preuss to enter executive session. Motion carried 7/0. Entered executive session at 7:16 p.m.
23.146 Out of Executive Session at 8:45 p.m.
23.147 Motion by Member Preuss, second by Member Jarding to adjourn the meeting at 8:46 p.m. Motion carried 7/0.
