Lady Bison nearly defeat Lady Scoopers

STURGIS – The Hot Springs Lady Bison basketball team had a close contest on the road this past Friday versus Class “AA” Sturgis which unfortunately ended in a 38-41 loss.

“We started out with a very cold shooting first half as we went 6-24 from the field,” said Hot Springs head coach Mike Remington. “We also only made one free throw. We then gave up two easy baskets immediately after the half to dig ourselves a huge hole.”

Down 21-14 at halftime, Hot Springs battled back by shooting 40% in the third and 51% in the fourth.

“We tied the game at 35 but they hit a huge three with one minute remaining. We just couldn’t close the deal after a terrific team effort,” Coach Remington said.

Senior Maggie Preuss finished with a doubledouble of 13 points and 10 rebounds, while junior Kaylee Bader had a seasonhigh 11 points. Sophomore Ashlynn Elshere added eight points and eight boards.

“We were short three varsity players so the others saw increased minutes,” Remington said. “Ashlynn Elshere and Maggie Preuss never left the court. Ashlynn came up big on 3-for-5 shooting. She also had five assists with no turnovers. We cut down on our turnovers, but they were costly as they resulted in transition baskets. I’m very proud of the grit that the girls have shown. We’ve had injuries and illness, but they never make excuses and battle each game.”

This week, Hot Springs (5-12) traveled to Edgemont (9-9) on Tuesday, Red Cloud (18-0) on Thursday and then host St. Thomas More (11-7) on Friday.
